Personality:

Jonathan Joestar is a genuinely good man.

Honestly, I’m not even exaggerating. Everyone that meets JoJo ends up loving him, because he is the type of person who can pull out the best in people, especially because he’s always capable of seeing that good in people even when others can’t. You see, Jonathan’s foremost goal is to be a gentleman, to be kindhearted, polite, sincere, and protect those who are weaker or in need of defending, and often dives in headfirst to do so without a care for what might happen to himself in the process. He always chooses to fight for what he believes in with every fiber of his being, overcoming any possible adversity or difficulty in order to achieve his goals – once he’s decided to do something, he does not back down from doing it. There is a strong sense of resilience to Jonathan, to the point that it’s even pointed out by the main antagonist of Phantom Blood, Dio, as being that “the more you beat him, the stronger he gets”, and he has an unending well of inner strength he can tap into when it comes to protecting those around him. Needless to say, he is an extremely kind and caring person, someone courteous to others and always looking to better understand those around him. It’s really no surprise that even someone as utterly terrible as Dio Brando can see how good of a person JoJo is, even to the point of straight up admiring him. Quite the feat, considering Dio’s literal goals as an antagonist are “fuck everyone else, I'm the best, humanity sucks, I’m gonna rule over them because I am literally God”.

Despite this desire to protect and achieve his goals, Jonathan also strives to not have to hurt anyone if he doesn’t have to. Even if it is necessary for the good of everyone, he doesn’t hurt more than he has to, and always has a sense of respect for those he is in combat with. This can be seen in two separate occasions, the first being when he meets Speedwagon, his best friend, for the first time, and the second when he gets in a fight with a warrior named Bruford, a zombie minion of Dio’s. In the case of the first, Jonathan had traveled to the most dangerous area of London in order to prove that Dio, his adoptive brother, had been poisoning his father in the intents of killing him, and find an antidote to the poison he had been feeding him. In the process, three men attempt to mug him, as he is very obviously rich from the looks of his clothes. Even when they attack him with the intent to kill, JoJo does not respond with that same intensity – he didn’t want to risk hurting them and making their families upset, as he knew very well at the time just how bad it hurt to have a member of your family suffering. Speedwagon, so utterly impressed by the type of man Jonathan is, makes everyone back off and leave JoJo alone, deciding instead to help him in his goals and stop Dio.

When Jonathan fights Bruford, he’s at first a zombie driven by the need to fight and destroy, intending to kill JoJo and stop him from going any further to oppose Dio. However, when Jonathan finally manages to strike him with a seriously wounding blow with his Hamon (an ability that utilizes the rays of the sun, making it a deadly force against the undead), Bruford finally begins to regain his humanity, and Jonathan notices it. He refuses to fight Bruford any further nor put up a fight, because there was no way he had any intentions of hurting another human being, let alone killing him. So inspired by Jonathan’s sense of honor, Bruford gives him his blessing in his fight against Dio, passing his sword on to Jonathan to aid him in his fight. Once Bruford passes away from his injuries, he too becomes one of the driving forces that keeps JoJo focused on his intentions to make Dio pay for his crimes against humanity, even if he had only known him for such a short fleeting time.

He’s a very compassionate person, perhaps the most emotional of all the JoJo protagonists so far, as how many would honestly grieve over the death of one of their enemies? Pretty much just Jonathan, as his heart is always filled with love and compassion for all those around him no matter the circumstances. Bruford isn’t even the only example of this, as Jonathan is even driven to tears by thinking he killed Dio, the man who not only killed his father, his mentor, Bruford via extension of making him a zombie, plus countless numbers of people both from his own needs for blood and the need for blood of all his zombies – after all, he and Dio had spent their youths together, and even if he never had truly considered him a brother, he still loved the man in some strange way. Killing a member of his own family upset him deeply, even if it was a justified killing. He’s just honestly that much of a caring and compassionate person.

Besides this, Jonathan can be a bit emotionally driven at times, sometimes against his own best interests. He’s a very open book and abides by his heart more often than his head, which is a rather reckless thing to do. Even if Jonathan is willing to take countless amounts of shit when it’s directed at him, merely grinning and bearing it, he cannot by any means stand by when it’s directed at others, especially those he loves. This ties into his emotions often being in control of him, as if he learns of someone he loves being hurt, he will dive straight first into avenging them without thinking things out very thoroughly first. A good example of this is when Dio steals Erina’s first kiss from her just to spite Jonathan, knowing it would be a great insult and drive a wedge between Erina and JoJo because of the very modest standards of 1880’s England, and how her kissing someone would be considered a stain on her purity. As soon as Jonathan learns about what Dio’s done, he flies into a rage to avenge Erina’s honor, getting into a fist fight with his brother in their home and declaring that he wouldn’t let up until he made the blond cry, which he accomplished, plus a very big wound to his brother’s pride. Jonathan does not abide by watching others be hurt around him, and he WILL fight back for them.

JoJo can be a bit naïve at times however, but it’s not to say that he isn’t smart or good at reading people, because he is! He just has too much of a habit of wanting to see the best in people and assume that their intentions are pure, because he’d much rather prefer it to be that way. He never once believes that Dio was truly his friend during the years between their youth and their finishing college, as he could always sense an air of animosity to him, but he never pursued calling him on it – after all, he wanted to believe that they could’ve gotten over their petty past, even if it was unlikely. He also is able to easily thwart Dio’s plans in his attempts to poison Lord Joestar, as he figures out his plot from an old letter sent by Dio’s father to Lord Joestar detailing the exact same symptoms of sickness, as the blond had poisoned Dario in the exact same way. He even knew exactly how to push Dio to make sure he would break and confess, telling him to swear on the honor of his dead father if he truly wasn’t poisoning their father, as he knew that Dio’s pride would be too much to allow him to do so. All in all, he doesn’t suffer the same infuriating naivety that most anime protagonists do, merely the kind of naivety that one would find from a sheltered homeschooled rich child who had always been raised to think good of people, and who hadn’t witnessed the darkness that lurked in the world yet.

As for his intelligence, he is very much a smart man! The problem is, he isn’t the type that can just be taught something once and know it academically, he has to apply himself more diligently to master something, especially if it’s a subject he isn’t particularly interested in – he has some problems with attention. But he makes up for it by not only being a driven person, but a driven learner and a resourceful one to boot, so when he puts his mind to learning something, he WILL learn it. Most of his attention is put into studying the subject that interests him the most, which is archaeology, and specifically the stone mask artifact his late mother left behind. He devotes all his time studying it and figuring out what exactly it could be, and actually makes it the focus of his thesis and dissertation for university. He ends up graduating as the second most top student of his class, only beaten out by Dio himself.

On a more humorous note, Jonathan doesn’t seem to completely understand just how big he is. Standing at 6’4” and heavily muscled on top of that, JoJo certainly stands out in a big way. But much like a very large dog that thinks it’s a very small lap dog, Jonathan doesn’t quite understand just how much space he takes up, often being a bit clumsy and knocking things over around him, or banging his head on doorways that he’s too tall to pass through without ducking. But he’s a very very strong man, capable of even ripping apart steel and is a prodigy at his Hamon training, becoming a master in just a few weeks of training; in non-academic pursuits, he is an incredibly fast learner. But looking at him, he seems about as intimidating as a puppy, despite his overwhelming size – he just always has such a warmth to him, a friendly and inviting aura that draws others to him. When you make a friend of Jonathan, you really do make a friend for life, and a very good one to boot. He will always work to protect those he loves and cares for.

Blue eyes, dark blue essentially black hair, big bara man with an innocent baby face

Abilities:
Hamon: http://jojo.wikia.com/wiki/Hamon The wiki is very detailed so I think this counts as being fine to supplement, but let me know if you want me to talk about it!

Stand abilities: Technically speaking, as of part one, Jonathan does not have a stand. However, Dio having a stand awakes a stand in everyone of the Joestar bloodline, so being around Dio for a while will do so for JoJo as well -- and luckily, he already has one assigned canonly! Dio has access to Jonathan's stand by way of having Jonathan's body, and it's a significantly advanced form of Joseph Joestar's Hermit Purple.

You can see it described here, but as evidenced by Dio in the series, Jonathan's version works a lot more efficiently, and doesn't require the destruction of cameras in order to take a picture.
